Jay-Z made an appearance on Maverick Carter’s and Lebron James HBO series The Shop: Uninterrupted. During his appearance, Jay shared his fondest memory of DMX. Which was when the late rapper opened for Jay during his 1999 Hard Knock Life Tour.
“The fucking arena goes crazy,” Hov explains when detailing the crowd’s reaction to DMX hitting the stage.
Jay-Z briefly touches on the famous battle the two New York emcees shared at the earlier part of their career. “DMX was so competitive with me. I never met a person more competitive than me. Not even my older brother,” says Jay.
Jay-Z also shares why he boycotted the 1999 Grammys for X. “We both came out that year. He had two number-one albums in the same year. They didn’t even nominate him,’ says Jay. “I won that year for Rap Album. So my first Grammy win, I wasn’t even in the building because I boycotted it for him.”
