Kirk Franklin admitted he lost his temper because he felt disrespected by his 32-year-old son, Kerrion Franklin. Kirk stated that he and his son have been in a toxic relationship for years and have been in and out of counseling for the past 20 years.
Nearly a week ago, Kerrion Franklin, the son of gospel pioneer Kirk Franklin, leaked an audio of a heated argument between he and his father on social media where the Grammy award winner was heard using profanity and making threats to his son.
Following the leaked phone call Kirk Franklin addressed the phone conversation with his son in a video post where the 51-year-old admitted he lost his temper because he felt disrespected by the 32-year-old. Kirk stated that he and his son, Kerrion had been in a toxic relationship for years and have been in and out of counseling for the past 20 years. He added that when his son became a grown man his behavior changed, and the disrespect became more aggressive. He said that he respects his son as a grown man, but he is not his equal.
“I respect Kerrion. I’m not Kerrion’s equal though, I’m his dad,” Kirk said in the video post. “I can’t hear you when you are extremely aggressive when we’re communicating.”
Wednesday, March 17, Kirk Franklin and his wife Tammy Collins addressed the conversation between him and Kerrion during an interview with Tamron Hall, where he admitted he lost his temper because he felt disrespected. In the 45 second clip Franklin is heard saying he would put his foot in his son’s a**, followed by “I will break your neck n***a, don’t you ever disrespect me”. Franklin acknowledged that some of the words he used were inappropriate and sincerely apologized.
Before the interview with Hall was over, Kirk added that he was disappointed in himself for his behavior and asked that people continue to pray for him and his family.
“I am disappointed in myself for using that language and at the same time, I’m human, I’m a father,” Kirk said.
