That Lena Waithe reign just won’t let up! The partnership between BET and Lena Waithe has proven to be a successful one. As Lena lands her third television series with the network. On February 23rd, BET announced a 10-episode deal for a new series titled “Birth of Cool,” to premiere on its streaming service BET+.
The show is set in a predominantly African-American high school in Compton. It deals with the everyday life struggles and situations of its students and faculty. Created by writers Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, the show results from a production collaboration between Lena’s own production company Hillman Grad Productions, and MARCO Television. Hillman Grad is known for its critically acclaimed projects like “The Chi,” and “Queen and Slim.” While MARCO Television delivered one of Netflix’s most popular shows, “Raising Deon.”
With both companies sharing a common mission to promote the stories of African-Americans and people of color, this collaboration is sure to be nothing short of black excellence.
Lena Waithe has already had a successful run with BET and BET+. Her series Boomerang, which is a continuation of the 1992 Eddie Murphy film of the same name, has aired two seasons. “Twenties,” another Lena Waithe original aired on BET in 2020. With rave reviews “Twenties,” has been renewed for a second season. BET seems to be entering a brand new era as partnerships with Waithe and writer-director Tyler Perry create fresh content and original series for the network.
BET has not announced an air date for “Birth Of Cool,” but representatives have stated that the series is in production.
