Rapper Lil Wayne caught some heat for his tweet celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. on the federal holiday recognizing the prolific civil rights leader.
To commemorate MLK Day, Weezy took to Twitter to pen a touching message praising the assassinated “I Have a Dream” author. In the tweet, he wrote, “Because he had a dream I am able to live out my dreams. I am forever mindful. Forever grateful. Because he had a dream I’ll never stop dreaming and dreams are forever. King. Forever.”
While this message appeared sincere, many Twitter users took issue with the messenger. In the past, Lil Wayne has received backlash for saying that he didn’t believe racism existed, as well as distancing himself from the Black Lives Matter movement, saying that it “sounds weird” and didn’t have anything to do with him.
Just months ago, the “Lollipop” rapper showed his support to former President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly endorsed racists and white supremacists. Trump has even been accused of inciting violence in the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. These occurrences have left many wondering how Wayne could care about MLK while being aligned with a racist and denying that white supremacy exists.
