Before his rap career began earlier this year, Mario Judah spent much of his time being the ultimate Playboi Carti fan. In fact, if you’ve ever visited Playboi Carti’s SoundCloud profile. You may have seen Judah in the comment section going crazy with the fire emojis and consistently asking for more music. It sounds like normal fan behavior, right? But wait — there’s a plot twist.
After growing frustrations with the constant delay of Carti’s third album, Whole Lotta Red, Judah threatened to release an album of the same name in an attempt to get Carti to put a date on it. “Either drop Whole Lotta Red or I’ll drop it for you,” said Judah in a social media ultimatum. Followed by a December 11 “deadline” that he gave Carti.
Well, now that the day has come and gone, and Carti failed to respond, Judah kept his promise and released his new album, Whole Lotta Red, performed in the style of Playboi Carti.
“I’m still a Carti fan but he’s making it difficult. I’m doing everything in my power to get him to drop. I’m beyond disappointed, I’m furious!” said Judah.
Produced, performed, and mixed entirely by Judah, Whole Lotta Red is the epitome of Carti’s sound and style. Incorporating helium-pitched vocals, clever ad-libs, stop-start cadences, and borrowed phrases from Carti, social media users started to speculate if Judah’s version of Whole Lotta Red will do better than Carti’s version. The album is home to Judah’s latest single, “Bih Yah,” and consists of only four songs.
Furthermore, fans now believe we can expect Playboi Carti to drop the real Whole Lotta Red on Christmas.
Just Monday, Carti’s producer, who goes by the name Art Dealer, teased a possible release date for the album. Posted to his Instagram account were photos of “WLR 12/25” and “THE WORLD WILL BE RED SOON” written in red graffiti on the sides of buildings and a billboard.
Although Playboi Carti hasn’t confirmed yet, the photos posted by the producer seem to be all the confirmation social media needs. For now, we can enjoy a labor of love sent to us from an impatient super fan. Whole Lotta Red by Mario Judah is available on all platforms.
