23-year-old rapper Silento, known for his hit song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)”, has been arrested in connection with the murder of his 34-year-old cousin Frederick Rooks.
On January 21, 2020, around 3:30 am, DeKalb County police officers responded to shots fired at Deep Shoals Circle. At arrival, officers found Rooks lying unresponsive.
It was stated by DeKalb County Police Department that Rooks endured several bullet wounds in the leg and face, and eight shell casings were recovered near the body. A call was made to the police by a neighbor.
After gathering several videos of surveillance footage from surrounding homes and performing a full investigation, detectives found Silento, whose real name is Ricky Hawk, responsible for the murder. He was arrested and detained on Monday, February 1st in Dekalb County Jail at 6:35 pm and charged with felony murder. Bail has not been set at this time.
Silento quickly rose to fame in 2015 after his song “Watch Me” became a social media viral sensation. The song rose to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified double platinum that same year. Its accompanying music video has become one of the highest viewed videos on YouTube with views over 1.7 billion. The song was also a big hit internationally, peaking within the top ten in the UK and Australia.
At this time, police officers do not have a possible motive for the murder and are still uncovering important details surrounding the case.
