In May of 2019, Selah Marley held an event titled “A Primordial Place,” that featured dancers and live music. Earlier this month, Rihanna debuted her latest collection at the Savage X Fenty fashion show. Upon its premiere on Amazon Prime Video, the show had fans applauding RiRi from all over the world for featuring plus-size models and a men’s underwear line in her new collection.
It wasn’t until recently that Marley came forward with accusations that Rihanna ripped off the design from her set last year.
“Quite a few friends brought this up to me & I wasn’t gonna say anything about this. But I’m bothered,” said the 21-year-old in a Instagram post. “For those who remember, I did ‘A Primordial Place’ in May 2019… I put my heart & soul (& all the money I had) into this project and…. I don’t know. Is it just me? As a young, independent, female black artist, I genuinely feel robbed. I’m not signed to any label… I don’t have any investors. I just have myself & the people who support me. It took A LOT to pull this together & to see it replicated almost exactly with no mention of my name or the work I previously put in is just ridiculous,” Marley wrote.
Marley accompanied the post with a series of photos and proceeded to ask her followers their opinions on the similarities between the two events. The top image is from the last Savage X Fenty fashion show, and the bottom photo is from A Primordial Place.
While some users agreed that Rihanna copied Marley’s design, several others feel like it was a stretch. Neither Rihanna nor her Fenty team has commented on the matter. Selah Marley has since deleted the post from her Instagram page.
