Trae Tha Truth Honored With Billboard's Change Maker Award

Rapper and activist Trae Tha Truth was honored with the second-ever Change Maker Award at this year’s Billboard Music Awards.

The ceremony took place on Sunday, May 23rd, with Tina Knowles-Lawson presenting Trae with the award. The 40-year-old was recognized for several efforts, including his relief work during 2017’s Hurricane Harvey that devastated Houston, Texas, and surrounding areas.  Knowles-Lawson said Trae’s heart was “as big as Texas” during her speech. A video montage was also played, showing Trae’s humanitarian work over the years. Images of his support efforts in Houston and George Floyd protests in Minnesota graced the screen.

During his acceptance speech, Trae spoke on creating change and using his voice for those without a platform, stating, ” I’m one of those who represent the struggle of the less fortunate.”

“It’s important to change people’s lives, it’s important to change the thoughts of those who give up at times, and it’s important to change things that wasn’t designed for our best interest.”

Trae Tha Truth dedicated the award to several close friends, including the late DMX and Nipsey Hussle.

Billboard Music Awards teamed up with Trae and The Most Famous Artist to create the first-ever awards show NFT. All proceeds from the NFT will go directly to Trae’s Angel by Nature nonprofit, which benefits Houston residents by assisting with living conditions, education, and other things.
