What Songs Was President Obama Listening To In 2020?

Each year, former President Barack Obama shares a playlist of songs he has listened to throughout the year. This year, with help from his daughter Sasha, he compiled his annual playlist, which featured an eclectic variety of artists, from Megan Thee Stallion to Dua Lipa.

Notably, the list featured hits from some of the year’s hottest artists. At the top of the list, Obama names“Savage” Remix by Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce as a song he was listening to. This catchy tune captivated many and inspired creators to come up with a dance for it on the Tik Tok app.

The song was nominated for three Grammy awards: best rap song, best rap performance, and record of the year. Additionally, it won two MTV Music Awards and was certified Platinum in the U.S. and Gold in Italy and the U.K. Overall, the song was a huge success for a rap star, so it’s no surprise that it ended up on Obama’s playlist.

However, Savage Remix was not the only smash hit to grace the playlist. Obama also included “The Bigger Picture” by Atlanta rapper Lil Baby. This socially conscious hit came in the wake of protests for George Floyd, who was killed in Minnesota last Memorial Day.

In the video for the song, Lil Baby includes protest footage. The track, which talks about Black people facing police brutality, earned a BET Hip Hop Award for Best Impact Track and a Grammy nomination for best rap performance. Again, it’s no surprise that it made it to Obama’s list.

The list did not only feature artists high visibility, though. It also featured lesser-known artists like EARTHGANG, JID & Spillage Village, who wrote the song Mecca. This track talks about spreading love and Africa, which some people see as a Mecca for Black people. Another lesser-known artist Obama shouted out was Little Simz. The UK artist self-produced a quarantine project called “Drop 6,” which included the track “One Life, Might Live.” The track features smooth bars from the UK rapper.

Overall, the list included a wide variety of artists who made notable tracks during an unpredictable year. Check out the full list here.
